2. Security in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is generally considered a safe destination for travelers, including solo female adventurers. The local populace is known for their warmth and hospitality, often going out of their way to assist visitors. However, as with any travel destination, it's prudent to remain vigilant and take standard precautions:

  • Personal Belongings: Be cautious in crowded areas like bazaars and public transport, as petty crimes such as pickpocketing can occur. Keep your belongings secure and avoid displaying valuables.

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Respect local customs and traditions. Dressing modestly, especially in rural areas and religious sites, is appreciated. Learning a few basic phrases in Uzbek or Russian can enhance your interactions and show respect for the local culture.

3. General Information

Currency: The official currency is the Uzbek so’m (UZS). While major hotels and restaurants in cities accept credit cards, cash is essential for local markets and smaller establishments. For cash withdrawals, Asaka Bank offers favorable terms with a fee of approximately US$2.25 per transaction

Language: Uzbek is the official language, and Russian is widely spoken. English proficiency is limited, so downloading an offline translation app like Google Translate is recommended to facilitate communication.

4. Crossing borders to Uzbekistan from Kyrgyzstan or Khazakhstan

Crossing borders

From Kyrgyzstan:

Travelers coming from Bishkek to Tashkent have the option of taking a direct bus, which typically takes 8 to 13 hours, depending on border crossing times and road conditions. Buses usually operate overnight, allowing travelers to arrive in Tashkent early in the morning.

  • Departure point: Western Bus Station in Bishkek

  • Approximate ticket price: 2,000 KGS (~$25)

  • Frequency: At least one or two departures per day

The journey follows the Bishkek-Taraz-Tashkent route, passing through the Korday border crossing into Kazakhstan before continuing towards Uzbekistan. While the bus usually waits for all passengers to clear customs, delays at the border can occur, particularly during peak travel seasons. Travelers should ensure they have all necessary documents ready, as border checks in this region can sometimes be thorough.

For a more comfortable experience, some travelers opt to break the journey by taking a shared taxi from Bishkek to Shymkent (Kazakhstan), then catching another taxi or a train from Shymkent to Tashkent. This option can be faster and provides more flexibility.

How to get

From Kazakhstan:

If you're traveling from Almaty to Tashkent, buses and shared taxis are the most common options. The journey takes approximately 14 to 15 hours, depending on traffic and border control procedures.

  • Departure point: Sayran Bus Station in Almaty

  • Ticket price: $13 to $24, depending on the type of bus and service level

  • Frequency: Daily departures, often in the evening

Buses follow the Almaty-Shymkent-Tashkent route, with a border crossing at Zhibek Zholy (Kazakhstan) - Gisht Kuprik (Uzbekistan), the main land crossing between the two countries. This is one of the busiest crossings in Central Asia, so delays can happen, especially during holidays or weekends.

Alternatively, for a faster and more comfortable journey, many travelers take a train from Almaty to Shymkent (~11 hours, ~$15-$30), followed by a shared taxi or a regional train to Tashkent (2-3 hours). This option offers more flexibility and can be preferable if you want to avoid long bus rides.
