What to do

Day 1-3: Lima

Lima, the vibrant capital of Peru, is a city that beautifully blends history and modernity. Founded by Spanish in 1535, Lima's rich history is evident in its colonial architecture, while its dynamic present can be seen in the bustling neighborhoods and culinary scene.

You may consider staying at the neighborhood of Miraflores, it offers a lively atmosphere, seaside views, and easy access to the city's top attractions and dining spots.

Here are the highlights of best things to do in Lima :

  • Plaza de Armas and Surroundings: Lima's historic center features the iconic Plaza de Armas, surrounded by architectural wonders like the Government Palace and the Cathedral of Lima.

  • Historic Center: Explore monuments like the Santo Domingo Convent and the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco, renowned for its catacombs.

  • Miraflores Neighborhood: Miraflores is known for its oceanfront parks, boutique shops, and a wide range of dining options, including the renowned Central restaurant.

  • Parque del Amor and Costa Verde Walk: Visit Parque del Amor for its iconic "El Beso" sculpture, then stroll along the Costa Verde boardwalk, offering splendid views of the Pacific Ocean.

  • Park Kennedy: Spend time at Park Kennedy, famous for its resident cats. Enjoy street performances and the vibrant atmosphere.

  • Barranco Neighborhood: Explore the artsy neighborhood of Barranco, featuring the iconic Bridge of Sighs, colorful graffiti, and a bohemian ambiance. Don't miss the art galleries and local craft shops.

  • Magic Water Circuit: Be enchanted by the Magic Water Circuit at Parque de la Reserva, featuring dazzling fountains and captivating light shows in the evening.

  • Surfing: Experience Lima's renowned surfing scene. Head to Playa Makaha, Punta Hermosa, or Punta Rocas to catch some waves and embrace the local surf culture.

  • Culinary Delights: Savor Lima's world-class cuisine, including ceviche, lomo saltado, anticuchos, and causa, we will share later on some great addresses for Peruvian cuisine

Day 4: Paracas

We took a morning bus ride with Peru Hop, who did the pick up from our hotel and we arrived after midday to Paracas, this small coastal town, that offered a peaceful atmosphere and a stunning sunset, we used the rest of the day to chill and relax.

The next morning, we embarked on a tour to the Ballestas Islands, often called the "Poor Man's Galapagos." We booked it for $19 per person with Peru Hop, you can find similar deals with local agencies. The tour started at 8 am and lasted about 2 hours. These islands are a wildlife paradise, home to birds like pelicans and penguins, as well as sea lions -We saw so many-  Knowledgeable guides shared interesting facts about the animals and conservation efforts.

Afterward, we had a short break and then explored the Paracas National Reserve, which featured impressive cliffs, desert landscapes, and beautiful beaches. Peru Hop made the 2-hour tour easy and informative.

What's great about Peru Hop is that they suggest activities at each stop, letting you choose what suits your interests. It gives you the freedom to enjoy your journey your way.

Day 5 - 6 : Huaccachina

​We spent the 2 next days in the desert of Huacachina, there are many hotels in place, you can find cheaper hotels in the city of Ica, but you need to arrange the transfers to the desert using Taxis or rental cars.

The famous activities in Huacachina are :  

  • Dune Buggy Adventure: A thrilling dune buggy ride through the mesmerizing desert dunes

  • Sandboarding: we tried sandboarding down the colossal sand dunes, a true adrenaline rush

  • Sunset: It is breathtaking to watch sunset over the desert; Huacachina's sunsets are renowned for their beauty.

All the activities were arranged with Peru Hop, and cost us 19$ per person

Since we stayed in Huacachina desert, we decided to witness sunrise very early in the morning, we climbed some dunes (wasn't easy) but we made it, and it was a pure moment of calm and serenity.

Day 7 - 9 : Nasca lines & Arequipa

our journey continued as we hopped on a night bus headed for Arequipa. Before reaching our destination, we made a quick stop to catch a glimpse of the mysterious Nazca Lines from a viewing tower. The ancient geoglyphs were truly fascinating, and the view from above offered a unique perspective. For those seeking an even more thrilling experience, there is helicopter tours but you will need to stay at least one night in Nazca region.

We arrived in Arequipa bright and early at 6 am after a comfortable night bus journey that allowed us to catch up on some good sleep. The bus seats were surprisingly comfortable, ensuring a well-rested arrival.

Eager to make the most of our day, we started with a breakfast before heading out to explore the city or Arequipa, known as the "White City" due to its stunning white volcanic stone architecture

During our stay we visited : 

  • Santa Catalina Monastery: a city within the city, is a captivating oasis of Spanish-Moorish architecture and vibrant colors in the heart of Arequipa. Its narrow streets, adorned in hues of blue, red, and ochre, create a picturesque setting. The monastery, once home to nuns seeking seclusion, features charming courtyards, chapels, and historic living quarters.

  • Plaza de Armas : the main square surrounded by impressive colonial buildings and the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa.

  • White City Architecture: We wandered through streets adorned with white volcanic stone buildings, giving Arequipa its nickname, the "White City."

  • San Camilo Market: We experienced the local culture and flavors at this bustling market known for its fresh produce, traditional crafts, and diverse food stalls, tasting fresh juices is a must in this market

  • Yanahuara District : the scenic beauty of this historic district with its famous arches, providing panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes.

  • Free walking tour : Guided by informative locals, the tour offered a deep dive into the city's history and culture. We explored key landmarks, and colonial architecture, it provided an enjoyable way to connect with the city's unique charm.

Day 10 - 16 : Cusco

There is plenty of activities to do in Cusco, every corner is steeped in history, and we delved into the stories of the Incas by exploring Qorikancha, the Temple of the Sun, where Incan and colonial architecture converge seamlessly. The vibrant San Pedro Market treated our senses to a kaleidoscope of colors and aromas, showcasing the region's diverse produce and local crafts. As we strolled through the bohemian neighborhood of San Blas, we discovered artisan workshops and charming boutiques, immersing ourselves in the city's contemporary artistic scene.

No Cusco visit is complete without visiting Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain and Sacred Valley

Day 17 - 20 : Puno

We took a night bus from Cusco to Puno with Peru Hop, where we had a unique experience staying on a floating island on Lake Titicaca for two nights with a warm local family. Our days were filled with simple joys as we tried our hand at fishing in the crystal-clear waters of the lake and joined in on some friendly volleyball matches with the locals. The atmosphere was incredibly serene, surrounded by stunning views and the tranquility of the lake. The evenings brought magical sunsets, casting a warm glow over the floating island, creating an unforgettable and peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It was a time filled with genuine connections, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of Titicaca lake.

Our stay in Arequipa was at a cool boutique hotel, very colorful and authentic, with a view of Misti Volcano from the rooftop. Right in the heart of the White City, it's just a short walk to Santa Catalina monastery. Oh, and the breakfast was really good too!

Where to stay in Cusco

We chose 2 hotels during our stay in Cusco, a spot right at Plaza de Armas, the hub for exploring neighborhoods like San Blas and the bustling San Pedro markets. It's the perfect central point, with easy access to all places of the city. The area is alive with energy, offering a vibrant scene with numerous cafes and restaurants to choose from, and a higher spot with an amazing viewpoint on Cusco city, more cozy calm area, but still 5 to 10 min wlak to Plaza de Armas.

Where to stay in Puno

In Puno, we opted for a unique experience, staying on a handmade floating island instead of the city. It's an all-inclusive package with meals included—breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Though a bit pricier, the enchanting atmosphere, spacious room with big windows overlooking Lake Titicaca, serene surroundings, breathtaking sunsets, and the escape from city noise make it absolutely worth it.

By plane :

For travelers seeking efficiency and convenience, air travel is the go-to choice for reaching Peru. Major cities like Lima, Cusco, and Arequipa are well-connected with international flights, ensuring a seamless entry. Domestic flights within Peru are also readily available, providing a swift way to explore the diverse landscapes of this captivating country. Domestic airlines, such as LATAM and Avianca, offer reliable services, allowing you to maximize your time and cover vast distances effortlessly.​​​​​​​​​​​​

By rental car :

Renting a car in Peru allows for unparalleled freedom in exploring the country, but it comes with considerations. Urban navigation is generally straightforward, aided by GPS, but in rural areas, roads may be challenging, requiring caution. Stay informed about weather conditions, especially during the rainy season, and adapt to local driving customs. Despite these factors, a rental car offers the flexibility to uncover hidden gems and venture off the beaten path, providing a unique and adventurous travel experience.​

By public transportation :

Public transportation in Peru provides an affordable and culturally enriching means of traversing the country. While it may require more time than other options, the cost-effectiveness and cultural immersion are significant advantages. Buses and trains offer scenic journeys, allowing travelers to witness Peru's diverse landscapes up close. However, potential downsides include longer travel times, potential language barriers, and limited schedule flexibility.

At the end end it is feasible, but you need to organized it well and take all precautions

Where to Eat

Peruvian cuisine is a wonderful surprise, a true culinary masterpiece from street stalls to fancy restaurants. The food is not just good; it's absolutely delicious. Exploring the country's culinary scene feels like uncovering a treasure trove of flavors. Traditional dishes, like the refreshing ceviche, or causa or the flavorful lomo saltado, beautifully showcase the blend of indigenous ingredients and diverse cultural influences.

Peru rightfully stands as a global culinary powerhouse, boasting some of the finest cuisine in the world.Our culinary journey through the country was an extraordinary revelation,

below our rewards and recommendations of some restaurant, that from our point of view you should try absolutely

Lima :

  • Punto Azul ($$): try the yummy ceviche and causa, and Arroz con mariscos, no reservation but you need to queue 

  • Al Toke Pez ($): a Japenese chef, who mastered peruvian street food, he is also known for it dedicated episode on Netflix, he makes one dish, the Combo; no reservation you need to queue, better you be there at the opening at 12 am.

  • Canta Rana ($), another nice address for sea food amateurs, very authentic decoration showing huge love for latin america football and especially for Maradona

  • La Picantería ($), this restaurant focuses on traditional Peruvian "picantería" cuisine, offering a variety of spicy and flavorful dishes. It's a great place to experience the bold flavors of Peruvian food.

  • Central ($$$$), ranked best restaurant in the world in 2023, this restaurant is known for its innovative and modern approach to Peruvian cuisine. we didn't try as you need to book it months in advance

  • Those also are great addresses that has been recommended by locals and Peru travelers : Maido, Malabar, El Mercado, Cicciolina, Maras

Arequipa:

  • Zig Zag Restaurante ($$$), known for its contemporary Peruvian cuisine, Zig Zag Restaurante offers a diverse menu with creative presentations and a focus on local ingredients.

  • Hatunpa ($) Veg, if you're a fan of potatoes, Hatunpa is a must-visit. This restaurant specializes in stuffed potatoes, offering a variety of fillings and toppings.

  • Sol de Mayo ($$), this restaurant is known for its picantería-style cuisine, serving up flavorful and spicy dishes that Arequipa is famous for.

  • Café D'Mario ($) Veg, a charming cafe located in the historic center of Arequipa, Café D'Mario is known for its coffee and pastries. It's a great place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Cusco

  • Green Point ($$) Veg, for those seeking vegetarian and vegan options, Green Point offers a diverse and flavorful menu. The restaurant is committed to sustainability and organic ingredients, and we had to taste the best samosa ever

  • Pachapapa ($$), located in the San Blas neighborhood, Pachapapa offers a menu featuring local Andean dishes in a charming courtyard setting, and If you're looking to try Cuy, which is guinea pig, a traditional delicacy in Peruvian cuisine, this is the place to be.

  • Morena ($$$), this modern restaurant offers a nice view over Plaza de Armas, it serves traditional Peruvian cuisine with a modern twist. The menu reflects the rich culinary heritage of Peru. 

  • Baco y Vaca ($$), if you're in the mood for grilled meats, Baco y Vaca is a steakhouse that offers a variety of cuts in a cozy setting. The menu also includes other Peruvian specialties.

  • Cicciolina Cusco ($$), an extension of the renowned restaurant in Arequipa,

  • L'atelier Café Concept ($$) Veg, for a little coffee break in this concept store, the atmosphere is warm, and if you're lucky you can sit on the balcony with a very nice view on the narrow streets of Cusco.

Peru offers an eclectic mix of culinary delights to suit every budget. Restaurants take hygiene seriously, especially those catering to tourists. Most establishments follow high standards of cleanliness and food safety. and for street foods tasted, we never had an issue, just take a small time to observe how they are cooking, and if you're convinced, go for it. 

To ensure a safe dining experience, opt for reputable and well-reviewed restaurants. If you have specific dietary preferences or restrictions, don't hesitate to communicate them with the staff, who are usually accommodating and knowledgeable about the ingredients used. Embrace the culinary wonders of Peru while enjoying peace of mind, knowing that the country takes pride in offering safe and delicious dining options for every palate.
