Kickstart your adventure in Bishkek, the vibrant capital of Kyrgyzstan. Begin by picking up your 4x4 rental car. We highly recommend Prestige Auto KG, known for their professional service and reliable cars. Prices range from $50 to $80 per day, depending on the season. If you’re traveling in July or August, book weeks in advance since demand is high.

Bishkek is a mix of Soviet-era charm and modern vibrancy.

Days 3-6: Karakol & the Ala-Kul Hike

The journey to Karakol takes about 4–5 hours. Known as the hiking capital of Kyrgyzstan, this town is a favorite for adventurers.

Top Hikes in Karakol

  1. Ala-Kul Lake: A stunning alpine lake at 3,560 meters.

  2. Jyrgalan Valley: Perfect for beginner hikers.

  3. Altyn Arashan: A lush valley with thermal springs.

We chose the Ala-Kul Lake hike, an intermediate-level trek. It can be done as a 2- or 3-day hike. We opted for a 2-day roundtrip, starting from Karakol, reaching the lake, and returning. Yurt stays along the way cost around $40 per night, including dinner and breakfast. Hotels in Karakol, like Duet Hostel, can help arrange these accommodations.

For those seeking a 3-day trek, the route continues past the lake, descending through the Altyn Arashan hot springs.

Spend your last day exploring Karakol town, visiting the Dungan Mosque and the Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

How to Get to and Around Kyrgyzstan

By Plane

Kyrgyzstan's main international gateway is Manas International Airport (FRU), located 25 kilometers from Bishkek. It connects to major cities in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia through airlines like Turkish Airlines, Flydubai, and Pegasus. For domestic travel, Osh Airport (OSS) serves the southern region and is connected to Bishkek by regular flights, which are affordable and take about an hour

By Car (Recommended)

Renting a car is the most flexible way to explore Kyrgyzstan, especially if you’re venturing into remote areas. A 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended for mountain roads, particularly if you’re planning to visit places like Ala-Kul or Köl Ükök. Driving here is straightforward, with scenic roads and manageable traffic outside of Bishkek. Expect a mix of paved and gravel roads.

By Public Transport

Public transportation is an affordable way to get around, though less flexible.

  • Marshrutkas (Minibuses): These are the most common option, connecting cities and towns. They're inexpensive but can be crowded.

  • Shared Taxis: A faster and more comfortable alternative to marshrutkas, shared taxis operate between major destinations. You can either share with other passengers or hire the whole car for a private ride.

  • Buses: Larger buses connect some cities but are generally slower and less frequent than marshrutkas.
